Best tracks from Space Ibiza’s last ever party

Space Ibiza officially closed its doors after 27 years. The legendary club, whose majestic confines on Playa d’en Bossa came to epitomise the hedonistic party scene on the White Isle, is set to be taken over by the upmarket Palladium Hotel Group and faces an uncertain future.

To mark this fateful passing, Space threw a monumental showstopping 16-hour sendoff party. The affair was, of course, headlined by Carl Cox, whose name is synonymous with the Space Ibiza brand after his 15 years of residency at the club; and also featured a ridiculous lineup of top jocks in support including Sasha, Nick Fanciulli, Josh Wink, Carl Craig, Erick Morillo, Technasia, Steve Bug, James Zabiela and many more.

Naturally, given that 27 years of clubbing history were being celebrated, hands-in- the-air classics encompassing many eras of dance music were the order of the night.

#1 Xpansions – ‘Move Your Body (Elevation)’ 
James Zabiela’s set in the middle of the night turned up a couple of all-time bangers, memorably including Joey Beltram’s 1990 Energy Flash. But this UK rave classic, also from 1990, with its brilliant clash between disco strings, vocals and acid, was the one that really got the early-comers going.

#2 DJ Le Roi feat. Roland Clark – ‘I Get Deep’ (Late Nite Tuff Guy Remix) 
Australia was in the house early on as this absolute stomper of a remix from Adelaide’s Late Nite Tuff Guy, a certified modern classic with its irresistible spoken word about getting loose to house music in a crowd of people (“How on earth are you supposed to vibe around the fake ones?”) proved the highlight of Technasia’s set.

#3 Gat Decor – ‘Passion’ 
Steve Bug’s all-vinyl set had quite a few big moments, also featuring The Age of Love’s 1990 self-titled anthem, but none more peaky than this hair-raising 1992 UK progressive-house anthem with its unforgettable piano riff.

#4 Moodymann – ‘I Can’t Kick This Feeling When It Hits’ 
The Detroit hero’s 1996 hit, which makes brilliant use of Chic’s disco classic I Want Your Love, was one of the tentpoles of fellow Motor City mastermind Carl Craig’s set.

#5 Winx – ‘Don’t Laugh’ 
Philadelphia techno innovator and Ovum Records boss Josh Wink broke out several of his own classics during his hour-long set, including Are You There and Higher State of Consciousness. But 1995’s Don’t Laugh, with its dramatic buildup, hypnotic acid lines and insane cackling vocal, was the one that really got the packed crowd at Space in a serious frame of mind.
